A recurring theme among vulnerable neighborhoods are vacant lots, particularly among commercial corridors. As communities become gentrified these commercial spaces remain unclaimed until there is a housing demographic to support corporate retail, even though there is often an existing demand from transient residents, young professionals, and other stakeholders not often incorporated into traditional research and data collection methods.

In order to drive the economic narrative, control of commercial sites early in the gentrification cycle is key. Collective site control techniques applied with incremental & tactical urbanism practices is ideal in scaling site use with pace of housing growth.

This dynamic also presents an opportunity to incubate local entrepreneurs by providing safe spaces for them to develop the experience necessary to operate future brick & mortar locations. Additionally, temporary uses provide the platform to pilot new technology, products, & services. Ultimately, with the proper physical space and resources an economic ecosystem can be established. The economic park program aims to create an economic ecosystem by activating a network of underutilized commercial spaces for the incubation of local entrepreneurs.
